Secure Microarchitectures
Protection against CPU level attacks
Modern processors use performance optimizations like speculative execution and caching. Side-channel attacks extract sensitive data by exploiting varying behaviors of such components. We develop new techniques to discover and prevent such vulnerabilities.
White-Box Cryptography
Protecting Cryptographic Keys in Software Applications
Cryptographic services ensure security in a broad range of applications like PCs, smart devices, or client software running in the cloud. Often, these systems are entirely software-based and can become vulnerable to advanced attackers. We explore which security guarantees can be achieved by current white-box techniques and seek new techniques to protect the implementations.

Medical devices and healthcare are following the general trend towards more digitization and networking. This can be seen in the electronic health card, digital patient records or networked and implanted devices. An important aspect is the security of the systems and the associated data.

Physical attacks are one of the primary concerns for security-enabled devices, as they make use of information leaked by the physical implementation of an underlying cryptographic algorithm. We provide new and efficient ways of protecting implementations.

Apart from research we focus on training new talents in practical IT security. In addition to usual university courses we offer a CTF (Capture The Flag) Team, where students can work on exercises from IT security to advance their practical skills.

The young Institute for IT Security at University of Lübeck performs research on various topics in IT security, spanning from IoT over mobile devices to cloud solutions.
